NHS Digital is responsible for the publication and maintenance of the NHS Information Standards ICD and OPCS-4 on behalf of the UK, as well as other products to support the implementation of these clinical classifications and derivative products.
The NHS Digital Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service sets the national clinical coding standards for these classifications in England and is the definitive source for these standards and guidance.

An eLearning module to promote an understanding of diseases and operations described in case notes by providing information on body systems, how they work together, and the terminology used to describe them.
This module must be completed prior to attendance on an 18-day Clinical Coding Foundation Course.
NHS Digital is currently undertaking a review of clinical codes that are defined as sensitive (legally restricted) to ensure that its use of provider data is compliant with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (as amended by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008) and the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (as amended by The Gender Recognition (Disclosure of Information) (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) Order 2005).
As part of this work, NHS Digital are seeking feedback on a proposed list of legally unshareable clinical codes. The codes that have been identified will continue to be used for secondary purposes, but all related information that could potentially identify an individual would be removed where the codes are used for any other reason apart from direct care.
Feedback will be used to finalise this list of codes, which will be then available for use across the health care system and within national data sets.
The closing date is 19 January 2018. Find out more and take part.
Part of the Legally Restricted patient confidential data change standard ISB 1572 Sensitive Data.
