NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices
The NHS dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) is a dictionary of descriptions and codes that cover product information about medicines and devices in use across the NHS.
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) authors and maintains dm+d with the support of NHS England, on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

Releases of the NHSBSA dm+d and NHSBSA dm+d supplementary items are published every Monday. Bank holiday Monday releases should be available on the day, but might not be available until the next working day.

Addition of Trade Family and Trade Family Group to dm+d
As of Monday 6 July 2026, NHSBSA maintains and supports the Trade Family and Trade Family Group concept classes within the dm+d supplementary extract files.
NHSBSA dm+d supplementary release 7.0.0 is the first to include Trade Family and Trade Family Group data.
The NHS dm+d browser and the NHS England Terminology Server now include Trade Family and Trade Family Group data.
NHS England dm+d Refset data includes Trade Family and Trade Family Group data from Monday 6 July 2026.
Historical inactive Trade Family and Trade Family Group data created within the SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension before this data was introduced to dm+d in July 2026 has not been migrated into dm+d. The first dm+d release containing the data establishes the baseline for future maintenance and publication of the data. If you need information on Trade Family and Trade Family Group data inactivated before July 2026, refer to the SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension releases.
At launch, Trade Family and Trade Family Group data is current up to and including 26 June 2026. During the initial implementation period, Trade Family and Trade Family Group data will not be refreshed on the same weekly schedule as the core dm+d release. As a result, newly created or updated AMPs may not immediately reflect the latest Trade Family or Trade Family Group assignments.
This is the first publication of Trade Family and Trade Family Group data within dm+d. The data is live and available for use, but will continue to be reviewed as part of routine maintenance.

Item summaries
dm+d XML transformation tool
Use this tool to read the XML files in releases of item NHSBSA dm+d in category NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices and convert the content to both Microsoft Excel and comma-separated value (CSV) files.
The tool:
- runs on Microsoft Windows (fully tested on Windows 7)
- runs from the C: drive - you may need local administrator permissions
- requires Microsoft Excel (tested with Excel 2010)
- uses a Microsoft Excel macro-enabled spreadsheet
No NHSBSA dm+d releases are included with the tool and must be downloaded separately.

The NHSBSA maintains a list of ATC classification and BNF codes linked to products prescribed in Primary Care. They are not an officially endorsed dm+d product and are provided for their own business purposes.
