NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices

The NHS dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) is a dictionary of descriptions and codes that cover product information about medicines and devices in use across the NHS.

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) authors and maintains dm+d with the support of NHS England, on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

Releases of the NHSBSA dm+d and NHSBSA dm+d supplementary items are published every Monday. Bank holiday Monday releases should be available on the day, but might not be available until the next working day.

News for this category

Upcoming addition of Trade Families information to dm+d

As part of the UK Medicines Terminology Futures work, the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) will begin maintaining and supporting Trade Family and Trade Family Group concept classes in the NHSBSA dm+d supplementary releases.

The NHS dm+d browser will also be updated to include Trade Families information.

These updates are planned to go live on Monday 6 July 2026.

Item summaries

dm+d XML transformation tool

Use this tool to read the XML files in releases of item NHSBSA dm+d in category NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices and convert the content to both Microsoft Excel and comma-separated value (CSV) files.

The tool:

  • runs on Microsoft Windows (fully tested on Windows 7)
  • runs from the C: drive - you may need local administrator permissions
  • requires Microsoft Excel (tested with Excel 2010)
  • uses a Microsoft Excel macro-enabled spreadsheet

No NHSBSA dm+d releases are included with the tool and must be downloaded separately.

The NHSBSA maintains a list of ATC classification and BNF codes linked to products prescribed in Primary Care. They are not an officially endorsed dm+d product and are provided for their own business purposes.
