NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices
The NHS dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) is a dictionary of descriptions and codes that cover product information about medicines and devices in use across the NHS.
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) authors and maintains dm+d with the support of NHS England, on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

Releases of the NHSBSA dm+d and NHSBSA dm+d supplementary items are published every Monday. Bank holiday Monday releases should be available on the day, but might not be available until the next working day.

Refreshed dm+d eLearning resources available on Delen
The dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) eLearning resources on Delen have been refreshed and expanded with new content.
The modules are free and help you build your understanding of dm+d. They cover a range of dm+d topics, from introductory information to practical demonstrations.
Transcripts are available, and some modules include supporting documents that point you to more information and guidance.

Share your views in the dm+d annual user survey
NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) and NHS England are running the first annual user survey for the dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d). They want to hear from people and organisations who use dm+d.
Your feedback will shape future dm+d services and content by showing:
- how and where dm+d is used across organisations and systems
- what dm+d users need and prioritise
- where dm+d content, guidance and support need to improve
If you give your role, organisation or email address, it will only be used to understand who is responding, clarify your answers and, where appropriate, contact you about future engagement. Your information will not be shared outside the survey team, and all reporting will be anonymised.
The deadline for responses is Friday 2 October 2026. The survey takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Item summaries
dm+d XML transformation tool
Use this tool to read the XML files in releases of item NHSBSA dm+d in category NHSBSA dictionary of medicines and devices and convert the content to both Microsoft Excel and comma-separated value (CSV) files.
The tool:
- runs on Microsoft Windows (fully tested on Windows 7)
- runs from the C: drive - you may need local administrator permissions
- requires Microsoft Excel (tested with Excel 2010)
- uses a Microsoft Excel macro-enabled spreadsheet
No NHSBSA dm+d releases are included with the tool and must be downloaded separately.

The NHSBSA maintains a list of ATC classification and BNF codes linked to products prescribed in Primary Care. They are not an officially endorsed dm+d product and are provided for their own business purposes.
